How does one
describe a legend? If you look up the definition, you will most likely see the
name Bill Spence. Bill has been a musician for over 50 years, playing banjo,
guitar, autoharp and the instrument he is best known for today, the hammered
dulcimer. In his high
school days he formed a “Skiffle” band in the style of England’s Lonnie Donegan,
playing for community organizations and school events. He took up his interest
in hammered dulcimer in 1969 when he first met Howie Mitchell at the Fox Hollow
Festival in Petersburg, NY. In 1970 he
formed a band named Fennig's All-Star String Band with musicians living
in the Albany, New York area brought together by a folk music organization known
as “The Pick’n’ and Sing’n’ Gather’n’”. For over ten years Bill conducted the
monthly sings which were an integral part of each Gather’n’ meeting. During the
next few years at the Fox Hollow Festival in Petersburgh, New York he met and
exchanged playing techniques with Howie Mitchell, Malcolm Dalglish, Walt
Michael, Jay Round and John McCutcheon, among others. In 1973
a recording entitled, The
Hammered Dulcimer, with
Bill and Fennig's All-Star String Band, was recorded in the Spence family's
living room on a 2-track machine. Home-recorded, with liner notes written by
Bill, this first recording has sold over 60,000 copies. Until that time, there
were virtually no recordings of hammered dulcimer music available. This lively
"feel good" recording captured the fancy of a new generation of musicians, and
became the source of inspiration for hundreds of newly-found hammered dulcimer
enthusiasts. The original Fennig’s All-Stars featured Bill on hammered dulcimer,
Tom McCreesh on fiddle, John Pedersen on banjo, and Joan Pelton on piano.
The Hammered Dulcimer album marked
the beginning of Front Hall Records, which recorded many popular folk artists,
including Michael Cooney, Alistair Anderson, Louis Killen, John McCutcheon, John
Roberts and Tony Barrand, Rick Lee, Lorraine Lee Hammond, Margaret MacArthur and
Walt Michael and Company. From 1973
through 1978 Bill Spence and Fennig’s All-Star String Band toured the East
coast, playing concerts and contra dances. Bill’s wife, Andy, booked the band
far and wide and called the dances. The group played at all the major folk
festivals of the time including Fox Hollow, Mariposa, the Philadelphia Folk
Festival, and many colleges and community events. Bill comes by
his interest in Celtic music honestly, having Scottish, Irish and Scandinavian
parents and grandparents. He lives in Voorheesville, NY with his wife "Andy" and
has one daughter, Hannah, a graduate of Oberlin Conservatory of Music, Oberlin,
OH. Thirty-eight years later Fennig's All-Star String Band still plays for
contra dances and occasional weddings, festivals, concerts, and community
events. An amazing talent.. an
inspiration for so many.. We are honored to present Bill Spence-- the legend--
on our stage!!
Never in the
history of our Club have we asked the same artist to come back two years in a
row-- but due to popular demand- we made the exception!!
And he accepted!!!!!! If by some
terrible run of bad fortune you have not had the pleasure of hearing this
amazing individual- let us assure you- you are missing one of the greatest
talents of our time.
Bing Futch is a master of
the Mountain Dulcimer. He is a composer, a teacher, an award-winning artist,
has an amazing voice and best of all, he is a truly wonderful individual.
With roots in both African
and Seminole Indian tribes, Bing's window on America is a unique landscape of
music, words and imagery. He began playing Appalachian mountain dulcimer at
Knotts Berry Farm Theme Park in 1985. It soon became obvious that this
instrument in the hands of such a remarkable talent would quickly achieve that
‘WOW’ factor. And it did. His award-winning talent has taken him all across
the US including multiple shows at The House Of Blues, Hard Rock Live Orlando,
The Bamboo Room, Freebird Live, The Orlando Fringe Festival, The Central Florida
Fair.. the list is long.
Bing left his California home in 1993 to pursue production
opportunities in central Florida where he, with his wife, Jae, established a
multi-media company, JOB Enterprises. Along with performing and teaching
workshops on the mountain dulcimer, Bing is an accomplished filmmaker, award
winning artist, a published writer whose music columns in
Connections Magazine
have been a Florida scene staple for over ten years and an award-winning
composer of dozens of scores for film and television.
Bing's high-energy, crowd
pleasing shows and unique approach to the mountain dulcimer combines to make him
a much-sought national celebrity from California to Connecticut. Named 2006
"Songwriter of the Year" by the Songwriters Showcases of America (with a 2007
"Song of the Year" award for "Crazy Feels Like"), Bing has become a specially
featured artist at festivals, house concerts and other venues across the
country, teaching workshops and offering private instruction on subjects ranging
from mountain dulcimer to home studio recording. He's opened for many of the
great musical artists of our time and has shared the stage with Chubby Carrier,
Tom Constantine (The Grateful Dead) and Robert Force. He has produced numerous
CD recordings and has published several songbooks. He endorses and is endorsed
by Folkcraft Instruments and V-Picks.
You do
NOT want to miss the opportunity to meet and learn from this dynamic individual
as well as see him on stage-- up-close and personal!! It's a 'WOW' factor you
soon won't forget!!
THREE
STANDING OVATIONS by
some 300+
people last year about says it all!!
From push to shove-- ya just can't get any better than this!!!

We've got the LEGEND!!! - Mr. BILL SPENCE!!!
We've
got Bing - Back To Back!!!!
The highly
gifted DENISE GUILLORY!!!!!
Denise Guillory has been playing the
Hammered and Mountain Dulcimers for some 20 years, teaching and performing,
using her many talents to include a beautiful clear singing voice that touches
the hearts of audiences locally and around the United States.
A resident of Mandeville, LA, Denise
performed with her band “les Amis” for 13 years and now is performing solo or
with other musician friends as well as teaching private lessons on both the
Hammered and Mountain Dulcimer.
Denise has also stepped into the
music director position (long time held by Paul Andry who has moved to North
Carolina) for the Bayou Dulcimer Club located on the Northshore of New Orleans,
where every Thursday she teaches new music and performs with them for community
gigs and club events. Denise has a very supportive and driven teaching style
that focuses on how the student learns and has had wonderful success with
students one-on-one and groups in workshop settings as well. Her patience is
appreciated and her belief that anyone who sets his mind to learn music will
someday achieve their dreams of musical success.
Over the years, Denise has produced 5 CD’s with “les Amis”, 2
with her brother, Maurice Trosclair, of New Orleans, and 2 others to include the
World of Hope Charity CD.
If all that performing and teaching isn't enough, Denise also
has her own jewelry business called “Fleur Denise” plus does oil painting!
"The mountain and hammered
dulcimer has enriched so many people’s lives in so
many ways. Pinch yourself and say it is so, that you were chosen to play one!
It’s one of God’s greatest gifts. Spread the WORD."
We are very
excited to have Denise with us this year! She is yet another great reason why
you do NOT want to miss Winter Creek Reunion Festival 2010!!!!
The
Martin family used to play music together at home just for fun. But, it wasn’t
long before they were performing throughout the region as The Martin Family
Band. This talented group performs a rich and unique blend of Old-time mountain
music, Irish, 18th century Colonial music and has been the informal
“house band” at Mt. Vernon for 15 years.
Locally, they have performed at events such as the Sheep and Wool Festival and
the Washington Folk Festival. Internationally they have performed in Ireland,
Scotland and Germany. Their unique mix of instruments includes hammered
dulcimer, mandolin, fiddle, banjo, guitar, button accordion, piano, lap
dulcimer, recorder and tin whistle.
Carl, the father, plays mandolin and tenor banjo and is also a member of the
Common Ground Ceili Band. He has traveled extensively playing music in Ireland,
Scotland and Germany as part of the Cimbalom World Association. Jeanean, the
mother, plays hammered dulcimer and guitar. She sings and has been performing
and teaching music for 20 years. She is also a talented visual artist who
teaches and exhibits in the Washington, DC area. Both Jeanean and Carl are fine
musicians who have encouraged their family and others to play music.
Children Lydia, Emily and Claude have all followed in their parent’s footsteps.
Lydia plays piano, 5-string banjo, recorder, guitar, button accordion and sings.
At the age of 17 she had the distinction of performing for President Clinton at
the White house. She received a scholarship from the Levine School of Music in
Washington, DC where she studied classical piano, and she studied 5-string banjo
with banjo master Dwight Diller. She is the recipient of many awards including
1st Place in the Old-time Banjo and band competition at the Deer Creek Fiddler’s
Convention, Westminster MD and was recently featured on the banjo staff at the
Folk Alliance in Memphis, TN.
Emily plays tenor banjo, mandolin, lap dulcimer and tin
whistle. She is a natural musician, mostly self-taught, who learns her music by
ear in the true folk tradition. She has the distinction of winning two
consecutive 1st place medals at the Mid-Atlantic Irish Music Competition. She
also received 1st place in mandolin at the Deer Creek Fiddler’s Convention.
Emily heartily pursues her
interest in old-time music, playing and singing mountain ballads with sister
Lydia. And together, they are studying Appalachian ballad singing with Ginny
Hawker.
Claude began playing fiddle at the age of seven. An award-winning fiddler, he
took 1st place at the Deer Creek Fiddler’s Convention and the Speedy Tolliver
Fiddle Contest and 2nd place at the George Mason Traditional Fiddle contest.
Claude performs with both his family and with his own band, Fauntel. He sings
and plays his own compositions, as well as contemporary arrangements of
traditional music.
An exciting new addition to the band is Josh Henderson who
brings it all together with his steady bass rhythms. At the Deer Creek Fiddler’s
Convention he took 1st place in the bass competition. To learn more about the
